Ken Ilgunas, in his candid and humorous memoir, reveals the fear he felt upon graduating from the University of Buffalo with a staggering $32,000 in student debt. With a determination to become debt-free as quickly as possible, Ilgunas embarked on an ambitious mission inspired by the frugality and philosophy of Henry David Thoreau.

Over the course of 3 years, Ilgunas embarked on a transcontinental journey, working odd jobs in Alaska like tour guiding, garbage picking, and night cooking in order to pay off his student loans. Once debt-free, he made a decision to pursue a master's program at Duke University without taking on any more loans.

Using his remaining savings, Ilgunas purchased a used Econoline van which he converted into his own living space. Parked on campus, the van became his version of Thoreau's "Walden on Wheels," providing him with both shelter and adventure.
